North Boulevard

For our seventh week of the summer, we welcomed North Boulevard Church of Christ. In contrast to last week’s group, this week’s group was the largest summer group, with 82 people. North Boulevard’s sheer size ensured that the week would be eventful, and they did not disappoint!

The primary theme of the week, consistent with North Boulevard’s previous years, was all about Disney movies. This year’s movie was Aladdin, complete with decorations and incredibly detailed costumes. Aladdin was also the skit for the week but with a slight twist. North Boulevard told most of the traditional story of Aladdin through their skit and incorporated Ursula and Scar as well. Most important, was the inclusion of Alice, a girl who already knew the story of Aladdin but longed to find a book that would tell her story. The skit focused on themes of identity and freedom. More specifically, how one finds their true identity and what true freedom looks like. The conclusion to North Boulevard’s version of Aladdin tied everything back to the Bible and to God’s love. This was accomplished by using the previously mentioned Alice character when Genie revealed that the book she was looking to tell her story was the Bible and that seeking God’s love and following his word would lead her to find her identity and true freedom.

For their work projects, North Boulevard continued to work on painting our wall. The group also utilized some of their member’s construction experience to build a new room inside the teen girl’s dorm for our dorm mama’s children to stay in! They normally all share a room.

After their last skit day on Wednesday, North Boulevard dedicated the rest of their week to filming their iconic lip-dub, a single-take video of choreographed Disney songs performed by the group and our kids. The rehearsal took most of the afternoon during one of the hottest days of the summer and it was clear that everyone put a tremendous amount of effort into making the lip-dub a reality. We thought it turned out great and everyone had a blast filming it and watching the final version afterwards!

At the end of this week, we celebrated the graduations of three of our kids from high school! The celebration was the perfect close to a week full of fun and spectacles.

We want to thank North Boulevard for all of the sacrifices they made to make this week a reality, and for all of the energy, creativity, and love they brought to the city this week! We can’t wait for next year!
